proofreader for any manuscript destined for publication."
Colette Gauthier Myles, head librarian (ret.), the University of California, Berkeley
Congratulations on realizing that you need a proofreader. (You can see by what’s frequently on the Internet, and in some books, that not everyone does.)
I am a proofreader not only by training but also by temperament and inclination. I like to find things that are inaccurate or out of place in a piece of writing, to help my clients ensure that their content is clean and understandable.
I have an eye for detail and an instinct for when words are misspelled. I enjoy reading slowly and meticulously. And I understand all those pesky rules of spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
As a proofreader, I can spot overlooked errors, such as a typo, a misspelled word, inaccurate punctuation or grammar, a repeated or missing line, and more.
I also catch the little things that most people probably wouldn’t notice when they are trying to correct their own documents: spacing errors, incorrect typefaces, unnecessary italics or boldface (or pointing those out when they should be there), and much more.
Spell-Checker = A False Sense of Security
You may think that running a spell-checker is all you need to do, but a human proofreader can catch mistakes that a spell-checker never can.
Think about it: If you spell a real word correctly — but in the context of your writing, it's not the right word — a spell-checker won't flag it, because it can't tell the difference.
Would you accept this company's offer after seeing this sentence (as quoted in a mortgage company's ad)?
"We've done are homework."
(Obviously, they hadn't!)
You've put effort into your writing. Why sabotage the results?
Let me deal with the blemishes that can crop up in even the best writing so that you can focus on the content.
